The gallery below shows some of the journey to Eday and the landscapes of the island. My goal on this visit was to photograph the Stone of Setter. It dates from the Neolithic period and is one of Orkney's tallest monoliths, standing at 4.5 metres high and 2.1 metres wide at the base . It is situated in the north of the island within a landscape dotted with Neolithic burial mounds, a Bronze Age enclosure and Iron Age field boundaries. This illustrates the continuity of use of this area over several millennia. This sandstone edifice has been subjected to much weathering over time and the resulting shape somewhat resembles a giant hand. There are therefore several tales of folklore associated with the Stone of Setter! As well as the actual monolith I have included a few landscape photographs, as it was a beautiful sunny day and the Orkney islands looked exceptional :)
